About this coffee
Papua New Guinea is one of the world's most unique coffee origins, home to more than 600 islands and over 700 indigenous languages. Coffee is primarily grown by smallholder farmers throughout the country's rugged highlands, where fertile volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, and elevations between 1,500 and 1,900 meters create excellent growing conditions. This lot comes from Simbu Province, one of Papua New Guinea's premier coffee-producing regions, where coffee provides a vital source of income for thousands of farming families and has become an important part of the local economy and culture. Kongo Coffee Ltd. is a locally owned exporter based in Simbu Province that has worked alongside smallholder producers since beginning exports in 1999. Today, the company processes nearly 10% of Papua New Guinea's annual coffee production and operates the country's largest and most technologically advanced coffee mill, equipped with modern Pinhalense processing equipment from Brazil. Beyond coffee, Kongo invests heavily in its communities by funding schools and scholarships, supporting agricultural training, sponsoring the Simbu Warriors rugby team, improving village infrastructure, and promoting long term economic opportunities for farming families. A/X is a Papua New Guinea grading designation referring to large bean screen sizes, with A beans representing the largest grade and X indicating a carefully prepared lot that may contain a small percentage of peaberries or slight screen size variation while maintaining high export quality. Combined with careful washed processing and cultivation at high elevations, this preparation produces a clean, balanced cup with refined sweetness, bright acidity, and the classic chocolate, citrus, and tea-like characteristics that have made Papua New Guinea coffees increasingly sought after by specialty roasters
